Maine’s separate state law on debt collection practices closely tracks the protections of the FDCPA. In addition, Maine law requires collectors within the state to pay a fee and obtain a license. In addition to the statutory and actual damages and attorney’s fees available to victims under federal law, debtors can also obtain damages and attorney’s fees under Maine’s own debt collection laws.
